The Third Superpower

The race keeps getting told as Washington versus Beijing.

Max Tegmark told Bill O’Reilly it is not only that.

There is a third superpower rising, he said. Not China. Not the United States. The machines themselves.

That is the line that lands.

O’Reilly’s long sit-down is We’ll Do It LIVE!, posted September 24. Tegmark is the MIT physicist. It sits next to the Sherman hour from last week.

Must be the YouTube algorithm - OceanGate Titan

[VIDEO] Perhaps you might be wondering about deep sea dives including the tragic dive of the OceanGate Titan where the five explorers perished when their submersible had been crushed due to the underwater pressure of the ocean and disintegrated.

This video was published seven years ago and shows how the body responds to being on a deep sea dive. Being under the surface of the ocean is a different environment than being on land for sure. Then again going to higher elevation has it's own effects also.

I'm seeing more recent comments to this video as others probably arrived there thanks to the algorithm which seems focused on this news of the day. And even one very graphic explanation of why there are hardly any human remains to recover from the Titan. What happened to them was said to be very quick and they probably never knew what hit them!

Timcast IRL: Harvard Offers Course To Learn About LGBTQ Infants, Sparking Outrage

[VIDEO] From the cultural war, how can infants be LGBTQ? And a further discussion with the cast from Timcast IRL podcast. The ongoing issue by the fringe to further sexualize and "transition" young people. When watching this discussion please use discretion, some of this will sound very uncomfortable. And for those going through it, it should be uncomfortable anyway!

Why doesn't the public trust the science?

[VIDEO] In this John Stossel vid we look at how left-wing progressive activism has infected the publishing of academic articles. In some examples we see how people were able to prank certain academic journals into publishing their non-sensical gibberish articles. And unfortunately sometimes some journals will post articles that they know isn't up to very strict standards to insure credibility. And even as demonstrated in this video they still might enjoy some prestige in Washington, DC even now!

Rubin Report: Scientist exposes the "follow the science" myth

[VIDEO] Depending upon your favorite Democrat politician from the Mayor of Chicago to the Governor of Illinois or even your local public health official you may have heard the whole follow the science line. Every mitigation from masks to social distancing to lockdowns to vax mandates they all are supposed to follow the science. However as Dave Rubin discusses with Brian Keating what if all these mitigation efforts weren't following the science, so what science are they following?

Coronavirus variants

We don't just have the United Kingdom variant that we've heard so much about. Now there's a South African variant, this virus is mutating though as with the UK variant it's only more contagious. The virus is very contagious though seemingly not entirely lethal save for age and other pre-existing conditions.

Here's more from Scientific America:

Researchers were only partly right. The virus is indeed bad—but it is not so stable after all. SARS-CoV-2 has been acquiring minor random mutations ever since it jumped from animals to humans. These mutations can take the form of single-letter typos in the viral genetic code or deletions or insertions of longer stretches. When they occur, most mutations either kill the virus or cause no change in its structure or behavior.

But in recent months, several new variants of the original virus (also called the wild type) have been spotted that appear to cause major changes in the way the pathogen acts, including alterations to its contagiousness. These viral versions have seemingly popped up in rapid succession in different geographical regions, such as the U.K and South Africa and Brazil, and in some cases have outcompeted the existing variants. Although improved surveillance and sequencing efforts might partly explain why these variants are appearing now, some repetition in their patterns suggest the mutations are not random.

“What we’re seeing is similar mutations arising in multiple places,” says Adam Lauring, a virologist at the University of Michigan. “That’s pretty suggestive that these mutations are doing something.”

Specifically, they appear to help the virus transmit more readily and evade the immune system. This month researchers reported, for the first time, that antibodies from individuals with COVID did not completely neutralize a variant first identified in South Africa. A few people who recovered from the disease also appear to have been reinfected with the mutant virus.

Thus far, vaccines made by Moderna and Pfizer seem to work against the new variants, although Moderna has begun developing a booster shot specific to new variants. Because these two vaccines are more than 90 percent effective, a slight drop in effectiveness would still make them worth using, experts say.

I suppose we have to continue some of these measures a bit longer. Social distancing, wash hands, wear a face covering of some sort. I was impatient thinking we can just beat this thing, however, it does as nature does it replicates and creates new versions of the same bug...

Mutated virus

You know when a few states were ending their lockdowns or stay-at-home or shelter-in-place orders to mitigate the spread of coronavirus or COVID-19 - remember to flatten the curve which should've taken two weeks and instead kept getting extended. Anyway what was my point.

Well ending the lockdowns in places like Chicago and others bled into the unrest over the death of George Floyd. I was dismayed at the riots and looting and it became clear to me by my own eyes that perhaps authorities tried to keep people at home for too long. And I would think as the weather gets warmer people would start to get restless.

And then I consider the economic damage. There are a few businesses suffering damage to their businesses both big and small. And some were affected by ongoing unrest - and no not all of those businesses save the larger ones have insurance. Indeed you may have lost a lot of product or equipment to looting, however, insurance may not compensate for all losses.

And now I hear there is a mutated version of this virus. Something else to get the public worked up over. In Great Britain they're locking down again because of it. They wanted to get back to normal for Christmas, nope we can't go forward says Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

What is this mutation we're talking about:

On 8 December, during a regular Tuesday meeting about the spread of the pandemic coronavirus in the United Kingdom, scientists and public health experts saw a diagram that made them sit up straight. Kent, in southeastern England, was experiencing a surge in cases, and a phylogenetic tree showing viral sequences from the county looked very strange, says Nick Loman, a microbial genomicist at the University of Birmingham. Not only were half the cases caused by one specific variant of SARS-CoV-2, but that variant was sitting on a branch of the tree that literally stuck out from the rest of the data. “I’ve not seen a part of the tree that looks like this before,” Loman says.

Less than 2 weeks later, that variant is causing mayhem in the United Kingdom and elsewhere in Europe. Yesterday, U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced stricter lockdown measures, saying the strain, which goes by the name B.1.1.7, appears to be better at spreading between people. The news led many Londoners to leave the city today, before the new rules take effect, causing overcrowded railway stations. The Netherlands, Belgium, and Italy announced they were temporarily halting passenger flights from the United Kingdom. The Eurostar train between Brussels and London will stop running tonight at midnight, for at least 24 hours.

Scientists, meanwhile, are hard at work trying to figure out whether B.1.1.7 is really more adept at human-to-human transmission—not everyone is convinced yet—and if so, why. They’re also wondering how it evolved so fast. B.1.1.7 has acquired 17 mutations all at once, a feat never seen before. “There’s now a frantic push to try and characterize some of these mutations in the lab,” says Andrew Rambaut, a molecular evolutionary biologist at the University of Edinburgh.

And now some of these same Governors who locked down their states especially Gov. Cuomo (D-NY) are looking into this and sounding the alarm. Like I said another thing to get the public worked up over although let's not fret too much New York restaurants have banned Cuomo for life ha!

It seems we may have another crisis, but I very much hope I'm wrong on this. Hopefully this vaccine will help bring things back to some semblance of normal as I had been hoping for most of this year. I hoped only to see this thing come back with a vengeance!

Remember murder hornets

And the media was sounding the alarm about them even before the summer's unrest amidst the pandemic lockdowns.

Well it's amazing that in a link via Instapundit wildlife officials actually caught one live. I still wonder if anyone was worried about it.

Was hoping to find a video to embed since Instapundit link went to a Weather Channel video about the subject, however, I found this interesting. A praying mantis defeats a murder hornet in a fight, well I'm being nice here. Let's just say nature takes its course as far as what really happens. [VIDEO]

Doctors question the lockdowns #Pandemic

[VIDEO] From the YouTube channel Blue Collar Logic. We see two California doctors who own a chain of urgent care clinics talking about the data they see from the coronavirus pandemic. They're ready to lift the various restrictions (lockdowns, stay-at-home, shelter-in-place, etc.) around the nation that is designed to help slow the spread of this virus. The above video is over an hour duration.

You'll hear this often especially in the beginning with these restrictions a large number of infections with very small amount of deaths. Also when it comes to quarantines we don't normally quarantine the healthy, we're supposed to quarantine the sick.

I think I heard this Sweden is going about their business they may have some restrictions (such as social distancing) but not as much in most of the U.S. No lockdowns there and it seems the Swedes are banking on "herd immunity". Then we look at their neighbor next door in Norway that has enacted restrictions and yet both nations have many cases but very little death. These two urgent care physicians have determined based on the data they've collected, why do we have these restrictions?

What's the deal with these restrictions here in America?

Dan Mace on his #COVID19 experience

[VIDEO] Usually I avoid posting on Sundays on any of my blogs, however, in this case I will make a exception. Besides, I don't really post a lot anywhere these days.

Dan Mace was mentioned in yesterday's video by big time YouTuber Casey Neistat as Mace himself  - as the 67th case of corona in his native South Africa - stated that he was positive for the coronavirus. Listen to Mace talk about his symptoms as he states that others experienced the loss of his sense of smell & taste. He also noted that this symptom was experience reportedly by others who had been infection with this contagion.

He talks about difficulty breathing, fatigue which are symptoms of this virus. However, its often been noted how these are also symptoms of the flu. He was treated accordingly, however, he was actually tested for the coronavirus and he was positive.

Mace has opted not to monetize this video and wants to educate the public on this. I hope someone see this 10 minute video. Instead of panicking I hope they go to the doctor not only to get tested, but to get treated. If you don't have any major medical conditions, especially the illness will be unpleasant however it will still pass.

This is freightening: artificial womb

[VIDEO] I'm just about two years too late for this video, but scientists have figured out how to develop prematurely born lambs in artificial wombs. It was noted in this video that once a premature baby takes a breath of fresh air their lungs stop developing.

I almost feared that they created test-tube lambs and needed them to develop fully in artificial wombs. That is in bags that are connected to tubing that are supposed to represent the umbilical cord from the mother.

In another 3-5 years there will be human testing. Talk about the 21st century with science and technology!

Stephen Hawking dies...

[VIDEO] Stephen Hawking PhD died last night. For most of the time I knew him in the public eye he was always in a wheelchair - due to his longtime suffering of ALS - and often seemed to speak via computerized voice. Also he made an appearance as a holodeck character in Star Trek:The Next Generation.

Dr. Hawking beyond those minor traits is often hailed as one of the greatest scientific minds in humanity. Through his work as a physicist he changed how we look at the universe. Yes I stole that from the graphic in the vid from ABC News.

Build a real starship Enterprise, how about a real "Starfleet"?

[VIDEO] Recently I watched a YouTube video with regards to the starship Enterprise. In passing the video noted an effort with a link - which was inactive - to a website that provided more information of a project to build a real live USS Enterprise. Then it gives me an idea.

Man I wish I had come up with this idea in time for Star Trek's 50th anniversary in 2016.

Anyway, my idea is for a real life Starfleet. The Enterprise - well all ships named Enterprise on Star Trek - serves an organization known as Starfleet. It is the diplomatic, exploratory, scientific and defense service of the galactic power know as the United Federation of Planets. Starfleet is not considered a military organization, but the service itself is built along military lines with a naval tradition.

Now a real life Starfleet - which wouldn't be a mere fan organization - would basically be a private organization dedicated to scientific & technological research & development in addition to exploration. From what I've casually observed with what's going on in space these days is there is a trend towards privatizing space. Who says government has to do all the work to send people and probes into space?

Perhaps this Starfleet could be the organization that is able to send people to the "red planet". Perhaps they also send people back to the moon. In both cases establish settlements or at the very least actual bases for scientific purposes. Of course this Starfleet could send astronauts around the solar system all the while developing better technologies - such as warp drive - to get our people exploring in shorter periods of time.

Of course to bring this back full circle, what about building the real starship Enterprise? Well the proposal I've heard involves using the design of a Constitution class starship - not clear if it's either the original series version or the movie refit version or even the one redesigned in 2009 - with nuclear reactors to power the ship, an ion engine for propulsion, & a gravity wheel in the saucer section. This proposed ship would get astronauts to the moon in three days - the same amount of time as the Apollo astronauts - and astronauts to Mars in 90 days. Mars in 90 days? OK worth a shot!

Of course using the Constitution class design seems like over kill. I always though a more practical design for today's spacecraft engineers is to use a design similar to the USS Defiant from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine or the NX-01 Enterprise from Star Trek Enterprise. While I recognize conventional wisdom is no need to built a space crusier - hence no Constitution based design - I think a practical design for a real live spacecraft based on a design from Star Trek should start with the compact or submarine based designs of the Defiant & Enterprise.

In my mine Enterprise would be what I wish we could start building for that mission to Mars. I'm not an engineer, however, this design could incorporate that gravity wheel. As far as the nuclear reactors or ion propulsion the real engineers of the world can figure this out.

So here's the NX-01 Enterprise as portrayed in the prequel eponymous Star Trek series in action. [VIDEO]
Meanwhile if it takes a few years to design, plan and build this advanced spaceship, what I will say now is let's get started!

BTW, this has got to be the geekiest post written here!

So now we know to put astronauts into suspended animation?

I became a fan of the film 2001: A Space Odyssey when I was still in high school. One plot point there was that the supercomputer of the spaceship on a mission to Jupiter went crazy - it was supposed to be an artificially intelligent machine - and made an effort to kill all the astronauts.

Two of the astronauts were piloting the ship and three other astronauts was in suspended animation. So this computer was successful in killing one of the non-suspended astronauts and killed the suspended astronauts. The surviving astronaut shut the computer down and continued to Jupiter.

I thought about that film when I saw this article. Placing astronauts in suspended animation was science fiction in 1968 when the film was released and it was science fiction back in the 1990s. While there were actually scientists studying this scenario it looks like we've started to figure out how this could be done.

The body would have to be cooled and has been used as part of medical treatment. In fact I wonder if this is akin to placing someone in a medically induced come. I wish I could answer this but you're not reading the blog of a trained medical doctor.

All the same, at one point in my life I always wanted to be an astronaut. It was excited to go on a modern day "Star Trek" even if the voyage was only to orbit on the shuttle or staying in the solar system going to the moon or to Mars. This article does discuss how we can send people to Mars and suspended animation is one way to do it without having to spend money on lots of food or anything else.

So, it seems again the future is here. Hopefully we're developing much more advanced and faster propulsion to send spacecraft to their destination and back to the earth. Which means hopefully there would be no need for suspended animation.

Study: Even ancient mummies had clogged arteries

They did some scans of some ancient mummies from mainly Egypt and other areas around the world such as Peru. These are their findings according to the AP:
Even without modern-day temptations like fast food or cigarettes, people had clogged arteries some 4,000 years ago, according to the biggest-ever hunt for the condition in mummies.

Researchers say that suggests heart disease may be more a natural part of human aging rather than being directly tied to contemporary risk factors like smoking, eating fatty foods and not exercising.

CT scans of 137 mummies showed evidence of atherosclerosis, or hardened arteries, in one third of those examined, including those from ancient people believed to have healthy lifestyles. Atherosclerosis causes heart attacks and strokes. More than half of the mummies were from Egypt while the rest were from Peru, southwest America and the Aleutian islands in Alaska. The mummies were from about 3800 B.C. to 1900 A.D.

"Heart disease has been stalking mankind for over 4,000 years all over the globe," said Dr. Randall Thompson, a cardiologist at Saint Luke's Mid America Heart Institute in Kansas City and the paper's lead author.
Still with this finding, it's advisable to continue living a healthy lifestyle. That is don't smoke and eat healthy!

A Martian Dream: Here's What the Red Planet Would Look Like With Earth-Like Oceans and Life - The Atlantic

A Martian Dream: Here's What the Red Planet Would Look Like With Earth-Like Oceans and Life - The Atlantic

The pic above is how our fourth planet would look like if it was earth like. With some landforms in the northern hemisphere it looks like they would've had a large continent similar to this fabled continent on Earth known as Pangaea. Well not so fabled as well there is a theory or perhaps it's proven that at one point all of Earth's continents were one massive landmass. Continental drift created the continents as we know them today!

In any case I can't wrap my head around Martian geography as well I know very little about it. I know about Utopia Planitia as this is the area where the Enterprise of Star Trek: The Next Generation was constructed. However I can't even begin to point to it on a map!

Well this show what Mars can look like with terraforming. And perhaps this could spur more interest in sending people to the Red Planet. Time can only tell.

VIDEO: Remains of English King Richard III found under parking lot

[VIDEO] A decade ago, I checked out of the library a movie version of William Shakespeare's Richard III. This film released in 1995 basically transported the period of King Richard III's reign into the 20th century and turned England into a 1930s fascist state. It's one of my favorite film adaptation of any of Shakespeare's plays.

Today, it seems that scientists may have found the maligned English King's remains in a parking lot. What an interesting fate and the question I have is how did they know remains were there?

Anyway, we now know what happened to the remains of one of the Kings of England. It's quite fascinating really. Just for kicks a line from the Shakespeare play: "A horse! A horse! My kingdom for a horse!". In the case of that line it was used in the 1995 film when he was attempting to start a Jeep. LOL!

Slate: Boys Hitting Puberty Sooner, Just Like Girls

Oh dear, what is going on? Is there something in the food or is this just plain evolution? I hope the study includes causes:
Boys in the United States are beginning to see the first signs of puberty from six months to two years earlier than previously observed, according to a new study published Saturday in Pediatrics. The study is the first to look at the onset of puberty for U.S. boys in 25 years and seems to mirror similar findings that have already been well documented in girls, points out the Wall Street Journal. The difference appears most pronounced in African-American boys, who are starting to see the first signs of puberty at 9.1 years. The average for Hispanic boys is 10 and 10.1 years for white boys, compared with the average age of 11.5 in previous studies.

The study has been a long time coming and is widely considered to be the most comprehensive attempt to measure puberty in U.S. boys. Still, experts cautioned that since previous studies were smaller or approached the issue through a different light, it might not be so easy to pinpoint how much earlier boys are developing, points out the New York Times.

Neil Armstrong, 1st man to land on the moon passes away

[VIDEO] Posting that 9 minute video above that showed highlights of the Apollo 11 mission. This was the mission that saw Neil Armstrong who was mission commander land on the Moon on July 20, 1969. Armstrong died today at the age of 82:

Neil Armstrong, the astronaut who became first to walk on the moon as commander of Apollo 11, has died. He was 82 years old.

Armstrong had heart surgery several weeks ago, and a statement from his family said he died following complications resulting from cardiovascular procedures.

"Neil Armstrong was also a reluctant American hero who always believed he was just doing his job," his family said. "He served his Nation proudly, as a navy fighter pilot, test pilot, and astronaut. ... He remained an advocate of aviation and exploration throughout his life and never lost his boyhood wonder of these pursuits."

On July 20, 1969, half a billion people -- a sixth of the world's population at the time -- watched a ghostly black-and-white television image as Armstrong backed down the ladder of the lunar landing ship Eagle, planted his left foot on the moon's surface, and said, "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind."

The myth of the eight-hour sleep The myth of the eight-hour sleep

To be honest I still hate it when I find myself awoke in the middle of the night and can't go back to sleep. Even worse when I know that I have to work in the morning, but strangely enough my work schedule is erratic so that makes it even worse! This is what the BBC says!
We often worry about lying awake in the middle of the night - but it could be good for you. A growing body of evidence from both science and history suggests that the eight-hour sleep may be unnatural.

In the early 1990s, psychiatrist Thomas Wehr conducted an experiment in which a group of people were plunged into darkness for 14 hours every day for a month.

It took some time for their sleep to regulate but by the fourth week the subjects had settled into a very distinct sleeping pattern. They slept first for four hours, then woke for one or two hours before falling into a second four-hour sleep.

Though sleep scientists were impressed by the study, among the general public the idea that we must sleep for eight consecutive hours persists.

In 2001, historian Roger Ekirch of Virginia Tech published a seminal paper, drawn from 16 years of research, revealing a wealth of historical evidence that humans used to sleep in two distinct chunks.

His book At Day's Close: Night in Times Past, published four years later, unearths more than 500 references to a segmented sleeping pattern - in diaries, court records, medical books and literature, from Homer's Odyssey to an anthropological account of modern tribes in Nigeria.

Much like the experience of Wehr's subjects, these references describe a first sleep which began about two hours after dusk, followed by waking period of one or two hours and then a second sleep.
