Could the resume hold a candidate back?

Since I'm still job hunting, I still look at articles talking about this process. The blogmaster of Ask a Manager writes this recent article about how a resume could hold a job seeker back. I'm not sure if that's the issue in my case, but these articles can only serve to help one tighten your process up a bit.

Besides if the issue is you're not getting any interest, then the issue is something. Perhaps it's the initial presentation you send to hiring managers.

A case of corruption in Mississippi...

I've talked about Mound Bayou - a small town in Mississippi founded by Black settlers in the late 19th century. Located in the Mississippi Delta region it recently made the news down there for a case of political corruption.

An ex-mayor of Mound Bayou embezzled some municipal owned property and money for a restaurant he opened in a nearby city. Down there it seems the local authorities mainly a state agency and Bolivar county took an interest in this crime.

The former Mayor Kennedy Johnson could fave up to 20 years in jail and $5000 fine per count.

5 reasons iPhone still beats Android

The debate continues iPhone vs. Android devices over at The Daily Dot. Lots of good points, but I usually just pick a phone and I'm done. I recognize that every person has their reasons for choosing a particular device. People are rabid about Apple devices and people are rabid about Android devices.

And you know no one ever asks about a Windows phone device. :(

Today is the day the new iPhones are available in stores

I took a pic of this scene at the North Michigan Avenue Apple Store in Chicago on Thursday morning a little before 12 noon. On Wednesday afternoon at least two people were waiting in line to be the first in the store for the new iPhones. I never understood that, but to each their own.

Today I hope the new iPhones are on display and the design is certainly eyecatching. Perhaps I will own one in the near future.

Skin color and support of the Republican Party...

WTF??? Is the Washington Post really attempting to equate support of the Republican Party with skin color? Are they out of their minds?

Then I had to look at where this piece is coming from WaPo has a blog named "Monkey Cage". Considering the nature of this piece I could like my mind run with this title "Monkey Cage".

I haven't completely read this article, but it's not so much about Black folks as it is about other "minorities" such as Latinos and Asians. Maybe Blacks can play the whole skin tone game, but apparently there are "light-skinned" Latinos and Asians. Who knew!?!?!

Time for a new camera...

In all the excitement over the new iPhone, I've realized another thing. It's time to get another camera and give the cameraphone a break.

It's really nifty to be able to take out the cell/camera/smart phone and take a quick snapshot. There are times it's more necessary to get a real camera with more capacity to take pictures as I used to do.

The longtime camera I had was a point and shoot which had a lense that allowed for focus and it got stuck. I took it apart and then couldn't get it back together where it would work again. Eventually i just forgot about that old workhorse sadly. :(

It was a point and shoot. Perhaps it's time to get another point and shoot. Better yet, perhaps it's time to get something more professional.

It's time to decide and time to take some pictures not on my phone again!

9/11 Remember

As typical on many recent 9/11 I avoid any programming that may replay the unfortunate events of that day. I've written a lot about this national tragedy and choose not to repeat them. However, I would like to share the tag that I used for most of them and you could definitely go back in time with me.

We lost a lot of people on that day and unfortunately we're still fighting terrorists today. Thankfully not here at home but definitely over there in Iraq and Afghanistan. Alas, it seems Islamic fundamentalist terrorism is making an an unfortunate comeback in Iraq though.

It just lets us know this is still a difficult fight to insure nothing like this happens again!

BTW, don't forget to click the September 11 tag at the bottom of this post.

And we've got a new iPhone model...

Apple's newest devices were unveiled today. I'm not as excited about the so-called iWatch as much as the iPhone 6 & 6 Plus. I still own an iPhone 4S which is to be discontinued however a slimmer device with a larger screen interests me.

The idea of a "watchphone" or "smartwatch" is interesting although I've yet to figure out how it works. Thankfully it won't be out soon enough as it's a little expensive. The extra time between now and 2015 makes it convenient for me to save money so that I can purchase such a device.
combadge for sale

The next thing we might need is something resembling a Star Trek combadge. Think about Star Trek communicators they had flips, then wrist communicators, and then eventually combadges. Yo Apple, where are our combadges!?!?!

BTW, even with the "iWatch" I still want to find an old-school Star Trek communicator perform some technical feats and turn it into a speakerphone. That be a cool feat regardless and very cool especially if you don't feel like keeping the phone to your ear. Better yet, cool if you don't want to wear a bluetooth device or headphones.

Regardless as per my usual tradition I want to feel one of these new iPhones before I make a purchase. What that means is that there's no way that I'm waiting in line just to be the first in my town to have the new iPhone. It's never that worth it for a device that seems to have a new edition come out every year or so.

It may take some getting used to a larger phone, however, the fact that it's much thinner than previous models will make this a palatable purchase for me. I give up some thickness, but with a much larger phone lengthwise. It's an interesting tradeoff.

ALSO, the idea of a "phablet" - the 6 plus is a phablet - is not entirely understood by me. It may well work for those who want a much larger screen than the iPhone 6, but if that's what I'm looking for I'll just get an iPad. At that get a wifi iPad and make sure you turn your new iPhone into a personal wifi hotspot!

LinkedIn: Don't Change Your Name; Change Your Attitude

Zack Isaacs writes another post over at LinkedIn's The Pulse. It basically is Zack's opinion on a recent HuffPost article about Jose who changed his name to Joe and began getting more responses to his applications - I shared this on Wednesday. The idea, is it really about a name or is it about attitude? What do you think about what Zack writes?

José vs Joe: Who Gets A Job?

[VIDEO] I've been doing a number of job hunting posts but this story just caused my jaw to drop. Over the years we hear how if you have a really ethnic name (or more specifically a "Black" name) it may decrease your chances of getting a job. Well here's one take on this, in this situation a really Latin name.

September has crept up on me again...

[VIDEO] Summer is over because today is Memorial Labor Day so to mark the start of Autumn even if the official day is not until later this month, let's hear some Earth, Wind & Fire. It's still a great song!

I marked the start of this month this way back in 2008!
