150 years ago...

Time mag ig

 On April 14, 1865 Abraham Lincoln - 16th President of the United States - had been assassinated by actor John Wilkes Booth. Not long before that General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union military leaders signaling the end of the American Civil War.

Rich Miller posted a link to an AP story regarding the assassination of President Lincoln. I can't believe they existed even that long.

And amazing just last year we acknowledged the start of the first World War and today we acknowledge the end of another way. So the world was at war at least 60 years after America fought a war against itself. A house divided...

Both wars involved long lasting changes. The world map changed after the first World War. As for the Civil War, the slaves were freed although it was over a century before the descendents of these slaves were truly seen as American citizens. Some might say we're still not treated as citizens.

BTW, it was interesting that Time magazine presented colorized photos from the Civil War era on their instagram feed recently. They were a cool look at a period of time I only thought of as presented in black & white. Alas I can't get to a link on Time's website so you have one example up top.

I also forgot to add that the Civil War ultimately resulted in the loss of more Americans than any other conflict fought by Americans in the history of the nation. Certainly it doesn't help that Americans for the most part had been fighting Americans. Again a house divided...

Originally posted at The Eye on January 5, 2007. Somewhat appropriate since late August the last surviving brother of President John F. Kennedy, Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Massachusettes), passed away at age 77. Also on Sunday The History Channel aired a program that aired TV footage and radio broadcasts of everything that was covered not only on the fateful day of the Kennedy Assassination in Dallas, TV but also the ensuing two days involving Lee Harvey Oswald, Jack Ruby and the activities in Washington during the days between Nov. 22 thru Nov. 25, 1963. Very, very intense and I could only imagine that I was actually there living the history although I wasn't there.


The day we left we took a drive around downtown Dallas. We went to the site of the Kennedy assassination which was on Elm Street. Thus I took pictures of the Texas Schoolbook Depository and the Grassy Noll. Great to be at the site of an historic event although for some this only recalls the sorrow of 1963. People still remember where they were when President Kennedy was shot.




This is the window on the 6th floor of the Texas School Book Depository. This is the window where Oswald was to taken his shots at President Kennedy.

See that X. It marks the spot where Kennedy was hit by an assassin's bullet. The closeup is in the next photograph.

Going back to the vault. This time republishing some posts that I made at My Mind's Eye (The Eye). Remember that blog, I would do some things differently over there and try to be more creative. Thinking about reactivating that site, but for now I want to post some other blogs from there. This post was published on December 28, 2006. Enjoy!

You may want to know how much this costs. Basically you have to pay an accomodation fee in addition to a coach seat fare. And the final price depends on when you purchase a ticket or when you make a reservation. It may be expensive if you're planning your trip say a month or so in advance but the closer to the trip you get the cheaper a sleeper room will be. I am talking about first class after all.

In any case, you may be able to buy a ticket and start with a coach fare but say if you give them your contact info and/or if you ask, they'll allow you to change your accomodations before your trip. In addition to that if you're already on the train you can change your accomodations while you're actually on the train. Who can beat that right?

Well what does having first class accomodations mean on Amtrak anyway, other than the usual bed on a train instead of a coach seat. Well your first class charges will include complimentary meals (breakfast, dinner, and lunch) and complimentary bottled water, orange juice, and coffee. No more going to the lounge car for those basic things, although if you need a snack you still have to go back there and get that.

I will say next time I'm either going to get a room by myself or get a larger room. It'll be fun. Or perhaps I should get used to a small roomette for a while longer.

BT Harvey Stadium

The Morehouse football season doesn't start until next fall but that doesn't mean there isn't any activity at the stadium. At this time there was a track meet held there.

Oh no!

I voted in the SGA elections yesterday and saw that Morehouse uses Diebold machines for the voting. Then I remember that I heard some stories about how these machines can be manipulated. I also wondered why we're using such machines for an SGA election.

Sculpture outside library

In front of Woodruff Library. Nice African type sculpture outside of the academic library serving the Atlanta University Center which is home to such historic HBCUs as Morehouse College, Spelman College, Morris Brown College, and Clark-Atlanta Unviersity. There's a lot of history inside too.

The bell

I watched this video produced from PBS a few years ago called Morehouse Men. It's a documentary about Morehouse College and we look into the lives of some of the students at Morehouse. One of the scenes you see will take place here at this bell. A guy says that a Morehouse graduate got his degree got his job and left. However, a Morehouse Man will answer this bell whenever it rings.

I was able to check this video out of the library many years ago. If you want to look for it now do so, it's a great video.

Stay in school kids!!!!

I try not to knock our janitorial staff but this can really be a good motivation to tell kids to stay in school or you'll make the errors these guys made in making a sign when they clean the bathrooms. The sign reads...

The first multimedia message

So this is going to be a first.

I got me a new phone over the weekend and this means that I'm going to start posting pictures here from my camera phone. Neat huh? Hopefully they'll be of interest and if not well this is just new content isn't it. I'm going to have fun and I hope you enjoy.

BTW, this picture is on Fair Street. The tower is on a dorm, Graves Hall on the campus of Morehouse College. It's a Freshman dorm with a lot of history and nicely designed too.
