Morehouse Pride: Stronger Together or Mission Diluted?

Since we’re nearing the end of Pride Month, I wanted to share this IG post from my alma mater, Morehouse College. It triggered a reaction that reminds me we’re not entirely out of the woods when it comes to “woke” or DEI influences in academia.

Via Morehouse IG

Here’s the caption that accompanied the post:

The House is Stronger Together.

This Pride Month, Morehouse College celebrates the diversity of experiences, perspectives, and identities that enrich our community and strengthen our collective pursuit of excellence.

As an institution grounded in the values of dignity, respect, belonging, and leadership, we recognize the contributions of LGBTQIA+ students, alumni, faculty, staff, and supporters whose lives and work help shape The House. We affirm the importance of creating a community where every individual is valued, every voice is heard, and every person has the opportunity to thrive.

Happy #Pride2026.

Matt Walsh is harsh here: sad and lonely failure of a person's origin story

[VIDEO] My Spelman sister, Stacey Abrams, is currently the darling of the progressive left in this nation. She ran twice for Georgia Governor and lost, and in 2018 she held onto the idea that she actually won the race. The second time around against her previous opponent and current incumbent Brian Kemp beat her more convincingly in 2022.

And she's still making her rounds as she appears on Drew Barrymore's TV program. Is Stacey Abrams a dodged bullet? Mr. Walsh says yes.

It starts off with Abrams being a Spelmanite dating a guy in college - and Spelman is an all-female school with all-male Morehouse just across the street. You see where I'm going with this, her then-boyfriend who claimed she was too ambitious and would be all alone was probably from Morehouse. Although Abrams is telling her story, so only she knows. Who knows where this ex-boyfriend is today.

Well Walsh states that she is alone - unmarried and childless - and her political career hasn't been successful as now she's known for losing things. He may well says she has little to show for her motivation to this boyfriend who was so mean to her that she was going to make him regret it.

Though I will say I wish I did have the story to be on national TV and Abrams does. Also to have the profile she does to make two bids for Georgia Governor. To even be considered without much momentum to be anything from a running-mate to perhaps a presidential contender herself. I'd say I don't have even that much to my name. She's not doing great, however, she's getting her 15 mins of fame.

O'Reilly: BLM Does NOT Deserve Peace Prize

[VIDEO] This isn't exactly new news another thing learned recently that Spelman woman and former Democrat nominee for Governor of Georgia Stacey Abrams was also nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. We learn who nominated BLM for the peace prize he's a "socialist left" member of the Norwegian Parliament, I wonder who nominated Ms. Abrams....

Well I could be wrong, but I think O'Reilly is going to utterly bash the Nobel organization for BLM's nomination.

Spelman alum gives up her corporate job for the cannabis industry

BTW, I really hate this headline for this article just so you know. She gives up "coke" for cannabis almost makes it sound like she's giving up on drug for another. Reality is she's giving up her job at Coca-Cola to enter into the emerging and growing marihuana industry.

It's an intersting look at a "minority" entering an emerging business that no one really understands. Also this business involves a drug like marihuana that is increasingly accepted even if many still shun it. Consider that most banks still won't accept funds from such a business because of any connection with any illegal narcotics.

In Illinois there is a law that allows for medicinal marihuana. In fact this morning on the CapFax there was an article about a court ruling on whether or not a state agency can unilaterally deny a certain condition can be prescribed medicinal marihuana.

Another question answered in the above article is the perception about Blacks and drugs. Even if increasingly marihuana is starting to find acceptance and ultimately decriminalized.

Forget Harvard...

Should a school like Morehouse or Spelman be free? Of course those aren't the only examples of HBCUs that should be free given that many graduate prominent Black graduates over the years. It's a great idea whose time has come.

I think about it because over at Instapundit I see a quick blurb about whether or not Harvard University should offer free tuition thanks to the fact that they do so well as far as endowment. I heard a classmate at Morehouse note that when you attend school at any Ivy League university the expectation is that you give back once you graduate.

Well I don't know if that's true or not, but if colleges such as Morehouse or Spelman has as much cash as Harvard does then the best students who otherwise can't afford to attend would have one less pressure to worry about. I had the pressure of paying tuition only to now worry about paying back students loans. Still just go to school do well and then graudate. I think that's what we should ask of our students but only of course if the school itself can provide it through primarily private funds.

Of course I realize that for the most part HBCUs likely can't afford to do what Harvard does. The reason being many of those schools hadn't existed before the birth of the United States of America. This are probably several centuries of endowment income and of course the willingness of alum and supporters to donate.

What if HBCUs have the successful networks of alum and supporters to donate money to these school just to make it easier finacially for those students - especially low to middle income students and academically talented - to just study and succeed in school?

To be honest this I can support. Why not just allow those students who have need and have the drive or ambition to go to a school on par with an Ivy League university to be able to attend practically for free? Only thing is they need to be on point before they start class and while they attempt to graduate in four years or so. What do you think?

VIDEO: Spelman College acceptance reaction...

[VIDEO] I wish there were more videos of some young men getting college acceptance letters. That would be very exciting but I recognize young men may not be so willing to show their emotions on camera.

Although what we're looking at is a young lady who discovered that she had been accepted to Spelman College she's even more excited. Why is she excited because this was definitely her dream school.

You know her excitement is contagious as I see that many Spelman women are sharing this which is how I got wind of it. Well one of my Morehouse bros shared it on his wall as well. He may share in her excitement as well.

It makes me wonder what would've happened if I had allowed myself years ago to take some risks and fill out some applications when I was still a senior. My excitement came years later when I found that I had been accepted to Spelman's sister university of Morehouse College. Though thankfully my reaction didn't elicit a YouTube video as they didn't yet exist!

I'm very excited for the young people who are taking one step forward in their futures, but it's also envy. My youth didn't exactly allow me to take life by the horns! Thankfully many youth today are doing the same especially when it comes to college.

Congrats Nia on your acceptance to Spelman. I also hope that you will be able to afford going to school there. Hopefully you'll navigate the intricacies of college finance and then avoid going into serious debt! Meaning hopefully you will be good the day you walk the stage and graduate as a Spelman woman!

VIDEO: Olympic Champ Gabby Douglas Deserves Better From the Media

[VIDEO] Gabby Douglas is a young black teenaged girl who won gold at the recently concluded Olympics in London as a gymnast. I've been hearing a lot about her performance in the gymnastics competition and other controversies such as her hair. Yeah, amongst Black women at least hair is at times an issue. Although discussion of Ms. Douglass' hair I've seen very little about other than on chatter via Twitter & Facebook.

Anyway, one thing I have read into more are attempts by the women of Spelman College to recruit her to their own illustrious ranks. It would be a find addition surely, getting a gold medal winner. Although it has also been said that Spelman is expected to shut down their athletic department. They may want to re-evaluate that decision if they want Ms. Douglass.

In any event, Alonzo Rachel of PJTV makes a very politically charged video about Gabby Douglass. Douglas is young yet and has a lot to learn about politics I'm sure. Rachel makes sure to note that the ones who not only talk about this young lady's hair, but her Christianity aren't her friends and are Democrats. He also blasts Republicans for not doing more to reach out to her.

Also I think he's right, there are Republicans who know very little about reaching out beyond their own general ethnic group. The perception, Republicans are mostly white and they may have a tough time reaching out to other racial and ethnic groups outside of their "core constituency". Besides there is an unfortunate perception that they never reach out to "minority" communities and they will need to do so now more than ever. As always, it's all about their message and it must go beyond - for example - Blacks used to be Republicans once upon a time.

I wonder if Ms. Douglas will receive this commentary and then start the Spelman College chapter of College Republicans. :P

BTW, Morehouse College has a chapter of College Republicans as seen on this listing of College Republican chapters in Georgia.

An unforunate outcome but a potential idea...

On April 13th, I went to a Local School Council meeting for my old high school (GO HARLAN FALCONS!!!!). Just before the meeting two of the council members had a talk about a student. One of them was a parent of the student and the other I believe was a counselor. This counselor had approached me about participating in a career day but currently I still have no "Morehouse man job".

The gist of the convo is that the young lady wanted to go to Spelman College. It seems as if her heart was set for Spelman but then came the financial aid award from them. And then disappointment set in!

The award from what I got from the convo was heavy on loans and unless I'm mistaken I heard nothing about grants. Even with that in mind they still had to come up with some cash to finish off the balance. It's safe to say momma wasn't going for Spelman College this trip and she referred to this award as a "racket".

The young girl was upset but after some reflection decided to focus her energies onto Howard University. Apparently Howard had offered her a better deal with a scholarship and let me not be dismissive of Howard it's still a great school. But this story made me wish that well I had some contacts at Spelman to help this young lady out a bit.

Also this leads to other questions. I would like to be this bold but without getting into anyone's business although I already did that by tuning into the conversation.

The counselor seems to have predicted that Spelman wasn't going to give this young lady any money. It makes me wonder how she decided that. The mother noted that the counselor was beaming when she heard the young lady was considering Howard University. Though perhaps beaming as if she knew that this was going to happen.

During my time at Morehouse College I had to learn the financial aid game. I never turned in applications on time but I knew the "high-touch" paying a visit to financial aid advisers could make a different. Well at least in the time before my return to Morehouse after one disastrous semester.

It's understandable that momma may not have wanted to go for it looking at the award. Of course if one was determined to go to the school of their choice there is a way. Of course, that might mean trying to eke out more money so that they can go to school figuring out how to pay for it after a year is entirely another. Then again I wasn't a senior in high school like this young lady is currently trying to figure this out. Though it does make me wonder what is the difference between Spelman College and Howard University. In fact this gives me an interesting idea.

It does give me one idea that's been in my head for quite a while. If there was one thing I do wish I could do for students at Harlan High School it would be to help provide scholarships so that they can attend the university of their choice. Although if I could my goal would be to start small and hopefully help some young Harlanite who wanted to go to Morehouse get a decent scholarship to be able to attend that prestigious Atlanta, Georgia institution. That may also mean that Morehouse needs to add one more place to recruit!

First Lady to give commencement address at Spelman College

Here's an official statement from that illustrious institution on this subject:
A dedicated proponent of service and working with young people, first lady Michelle Obama is an example of how one woman can positively influence the world. On Sunday, May 15, at 3 p.m., at the Georgia International Convention Center, Mrs. Obama will inspire more than 500 graduates to also leave their mark on the world when she delivers the commencement address to the Spelman College class of 2011. Mrs. Obama will also receive an honorary degree.

Honorary degrees will also be bestowed upon director, actress and choreographer Debbie Allen, and her sister, actress and director Phylicia Rashad. Wendy Kopp, CEO and founder of Teach For America will receive the National Community Service Award.

"Having Mrs. Obama as our 2011 Commencement speaker is a true honor because she embodies the Spelman College mission which is to prepare women to change the world in a meaningful way," said Beverly Daniel Tatum, Ph.D., president, Spelman College. "I know our students will be inspired by her powerful presence."
Did I mention that in time for my commencement, Morehouse attempted to have President Obama give the commencement address? It didn't happen and that OK, I hear there was a lot of logistical things to work out. I mean Obama is the leader of the Free World and there are security measures that need to be in place for him.

If you want to know how excited Spelman is about Michele Obama coming to speak to their graduates look no further than this screenshot! A likeness of our first lady is in the masthead of the Spelman College homepage.

Spelmanite killed by stray bullet

I just found out about this morning. I quickly Googled her name and found this article.

In incidents like this the story is rarely very different. Someone got mad and decided to pull out their weapon then started firing at random. It doesn't matter what reason, what matters is the knucklehead with the gun decided to use this gun in this fashion.

The result 19-year-old Spelman student Jasmin Lynn was murdered early this morning by a stray bullet by this individual with poor impulse control! She became another victim of senseless urban violence.

I'm not trying to retrace Ms. Lynn's steps. Accounts indicate that she was close to Woodruff Library on her way back to Spelman's campus. I was often at the library but rarely late, but if I had remained at Morehouse I would be there to witness the various after effects of this incident.

What's tragic was because of poor conflict resolution it resulted in the death of an innocent bystander. To be sure there have been shootings around that campus before and students have been killed in the West End neighborhood where the AUC resides. I just hope that there won't be anymore tragedies like these and will take the lives of any students who goes to school there.

EDIT: I also forgot to note that the semester is only a week and a half old. It's very unfortunate that the semester starts off in this way!
