Common Sense, Not Ideology

The New York Post ran this on Mayor Daniel Lurie’s interview with CNN’s Dana Bash.

The full interview is here: [VIDEO]

He said the city lost its way.

“We got so entrapped in our progressive values and talking about progressivism that we weren’t taking stock of what was happening on our streets.”

He pointed to 810 overdose deaths three years ago and 30,000 car break-ins.

“There’s nothing progressive about that.”

Break-ins are down 90 percent under him. He still wants the city to look out for immigrants and the LGBTQ community. What he rejects is treating open-air drug use and shoplifting as acceptable. His line is the mother walking her child to the bus stop who should not have to see that.

This sits next to the June post on Bill O’Reilly’s NewsNation special The Decline and Fall of San Francisco. O’Reilly walked the Tenderloin and called the progressive experiment compassion without consequences. Lurie is now saying roughly the same thing from inside the office.

Lurie is the moderate Democrat who beat London Breed in 2024. He has shielded the police budget from cuts, raised officer pay, and started a hiring push after the department was hundreds of officers short. In addition, he made 600 treatment and recovery beds available last year.
