Another Stephen Douglas monument to go

Douglas Monument by Really Boring/flickr
This time in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood according a proposal from three Democrat state representatives from Chicago. As recorded in history the late US Senate Stephen Douglas ran for President against the late Abraham Lincoln (the 16th POTUS) in 1860. The controversy became now in 2020 that Douglas had at one point owned slaves during his lifetime.
Last week the Speaker of the state house expressed interest in removing Sen. Douglas' portrait from the floor of the IL House of Representatives to be replaced by the 44th POTUS Barack Obama.

Here's more information on Sen. Douglas' monument actually it's his tomb, here's buried on 35th Street.

Howard students can't name a war the US had fought in

[VIDEO] I'm sorry to have missed this video from Campus Reform from the campus of Howard University in Washington, DC (a prestigious HBCU).

Found this via Marathon Pundit where I commented that HBCU students shouldn't be insulated from the significant events of the world. It turns out I was a tad off base.

Many of these students don't believe any war fought by America is justified. Some cited the Civil War - it helps that Howard was created after the conflict which freed the slaves. Otherwise many of these students are really just anti-war.

The 2nd World War comes up but many students can't even justify why we must fight the evil regime of Nazi Germany at the time.

Prager U: Was the Civil War About Slavery?

[VIDEO] Almost 3 years ago Col. Ty Seidule - professor of history at West Point - does a video for Prager U about whether or not the Civil War was over the slavery question. He argues that it was, and I know many who would disagree with that. Though I could agree that slavery was one of many reasons that we had a war between the states.

Worst still the Union victory might have legally ended slavery in the reunited United States of America. Problem is we're still dealing with a variety of racial issues that still remained unresolved at the end of the war. We still had the Jim Crow period which basically ended with the civil rights activism of the 1950s and 1960s. And race is still a dicey subject today in the 21st century.

Even worse it seems a form of  "reverse racism" is on the rise. It's seems backwards we had been fighting singling out a race of people for inferiority. Now the trend is singling out a race of people for their so-called privilege. Case in point "Failed Democrat Candidate Saira Rao Has ‘Given Up on White People’"

WOW!

Time mag ig
On April 14, 1865 Abraham Lincoln - 16th President of the United States - had been assassinated by actor John Wilkes Booth. Not long before that General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union military leaders signaling the end of the American Civil War.

Rich Miller posted a link to an AP story regarding the assassination of President Lincoln. I can't believe they existed even that long.

And amazing just last year we acknowledged the start of the first World War and today we acknowledge the end of another way. So the world was at war at least 60 years after America fought a war against itself. A house divided...

Both wars involved long lasting changes. The world map changed after the first World War. As for the Civil War, the slaves were freed although it was over a century before the descendents of these slaves were truly seen as American citizens. Some might say we're still not treated as citizens.

BTW, it was interesting that Time magazine presented colorized photos from the Civil War era on their instagram feed recently. They were a cool look at a period of time I only thought of as presented in black & white. Alas I can't get to a link on Time's website so you have one example up top.

I also forgot to add that the Civil War ultimately resulted in the loss of more Americans than any other conflict fought by Americans in the history of the nation. Certainly it doesn't help that Americans for the most part had been fighting Americans. Again a house divided...

Jim Limber Davis -- Rescued by the Confederacy's First Lady

Check out this story of Jim Limber pictured to the left. He was accepted into the family of Jefferson Davis. Yes, that guy the only President of the Confederate States of America. Davis' wife rescued him from an abusive man and took care of the boy and was ultimately accepted into the family.

Let's not forget that the Confederates lost the Civil War although it doesn't appear to be explored during the course of the story linked above he was taken away from the family by a Union general. The Davis' never were able to find out his fate.

You know we always were taught that the Confederacy supported slavery and perhaps by proxy very evil. Yet we hear stories like this and then we may recognize it's not entirely black & white. Of course that's not to say slavery was OK or anything like that.
