Fauci Takes the Fifth 111 Times

The below meme says it better than most commentary. A guy offers basic health advice and gets told he’s not a doctor. Then comes the punchline: “Your doctor invoked the 5th 111 times.”

Yesterday’s Senate Homeland Security hearing with Dr. Anthony Fauci was less a fact-finding session and more performance art. Fauci invoked the Fifth Amendment over and over—refusing to answer even basic questions. At one point Rand Paul asked what day of the week it was. Fauci still took the Fifth.

The hearing’s most dramatic moment came early. One of Fauci’s attorneys, David Schertler, repeatedly tried to interject from the table. Paul had already told the lawyers they were not recognized and were not to sit at the witness table. When Schertler kept speaking, Paul ordered security to remove him. “You are not recognized, sir. Security, please remove him from the room.” Capitol Police escorted the attorney out. Applause followed in some corners of the room.

While that was unfolding, the White House posted two words — “The truth.” — with a link to a page titled “Lab Leak: The True Origins of Covid-19.” The page lays out the case that the virus most likely came from a lab-related incident at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, cites gain-of-function research, notes early illnesses among researchers, and criticizes efforts (including those tied to Fauci) to push a natural-origin narrative and shut down alternative discussion.

Bill O’Reilly’s breakdown of the hearing captures the bigger picture. He walks through the same issues that have dominated the last few days: the more than 1,100 pages of Fauci’s private diary that Paul released over the weekend, the private notes that contradict what Fauci told the public about school closures and lockdowns, the early discussions about a possible lab origin, and Fauci’s own reflections on his sudden media fame. O’Reilly calls him a longtime “swamp creature” who flip-flopped on masks, pushed long school closures while European children stayed in class, and now sits protected by a late-term Biden pardon.

The diary entries remain the most damaging material. In March 2020 Fauci privately recorded conversations in which he said he “convinced” New York Mayor Bill de Blasio to close city schools and noted that California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office was moving to shut schools, bars, and restaurants based on Fauci’s television appearances. Years later Fauci publicly insisted he had “nothing to do” with school closures. Those private notes versus public claims are now the central exhibit.

Add the attorney’s removal and the wall of Fifth Amendment answers, and the hearing becomes a single image: a once-unquestioned public health authority refusing to answer questions while his lawyer is physically removed for disrupting the proceeding.

This is not the end of the story. Contempt discussions are already floating, more diary pages may still surface, and the political fight over what the private record actually shows is only getting started.
