Even Hostin Said Wait

This showed up on Steve Bartin’s Newsalert Tuesday afternoon. Sunny Hostin, on the liberal morning show The View, talking about the Cornell case. Journalist Glenn Greenwald posted the same clip on X: if even she is saying wait, the point should not be hard.

Last week a former student filed a civil suit. She says that in October 2024, at Chi Phi, she was drugged and assaulted by seven fraternity members. A group chat from that night is out. A site went up naming the seven. None of them has been criminally charged.

Tompkins County DA Matthew Van Houten declined to prosecute in 2024. He has reopened it and says he will take it to a grand jury. He also says the new civil allegations are “dramatically different” from the account his office had then.

Hostin says she read Jane Doe’s 2024 statement. She says that under New York law, voluntary intoxication that only impairs judgment is not, by itself, inability to consent. She says three of the men, on that statement, did not touch her, and that one told people to get out. Then this:

“The pictures of these young men who have not been charged, not been adjudicated, are being plastered all over the internet. I think people are reporting this story inaccurately. I think they’re reporting it unfairly… there is no way, according to her statement in 2024, that any prosecutor would have brought forth a case.”

She also said she believes women, and that the 2024 statement and the 2026 lawsuit are not the same document.

This looks like the next moral outrage. The pictures are already moving on Facebook and Instagram. Some of the comments are not “wait for the court.” They are not asking what the law will call a crime. They are asking how to make the men as wrecked as they believe she is.

“Believe all victims” is the language that travels with a story like this. Trust but verify is the slower sentence. The allegations are ugly. Hearing them is enough to be disturbed. That feeling is not a charge.

Van Houten is taking it to a grand jury. That is the place for the question. The social media feed is not. Innocent until proven guilty is not a courtesy you give after the pictures have done their work. It is the rule before they do.
