President Donald Trump continues pressing the Smithsonian Institution to shift away from what he calls divisive, overly negative portrayals of American history — even as the nation reflects on its 250th anniversary.
Key Trump Statement (Truth Social, August 2025):

In more recent coverage, The White House released a detailed report on July 4 criticizing the National Museum of American History for “extreme political activism.” It accuses leadership of ideological capture and undermining faith in American institutions. See full context in this Washington Post article.
Background: The 2020 "Whiteness" Chart
This builds on earlier controversy. In 2020, the National Museum of African American History and Culture featured a graphic titled "Aspects and Assumptions of Whiteness & White Culture in the United States". It listed traits like hard work, individualism, rational thinking, and the nuclear family as aspects of "whiteness." Critics called it divisive; the museum later removed the chart amid backlash.
Allow me to add the fact that the graphic still exists somewhere, just know the internet is forever!
Trump's 2025 Executive Order
On March 27, 2025, Trump signed Executive Order 14253 "Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History" order. It directs removal of "improper ideology" from Smithsonian properties, ties funding to avoiding race-based division, and aims to restore uplifting narratives of American greatness and progress.
The effort has continued with reviews of exhibits and the recent July 2026 "Save America's Story" report.
Why It Matters
Trump argues museums should celebrate success and unity, not shame. With America 250 now behind us, the debate over how we tell our national story remains front and center. Supporters see necessary accountability; critics warn of politicized history.
