City opens job-training center on West Side

From Crain's Chicago Business today...
The center, located at the Austin Wellness Center at 4800 W. Chicago Ave., will provide residents with basic reading, math and language skills, according to a statement from Mayor Richard M. Daley’s office.

Residents will also be able to obtain assistance with child care, transportation, substance abuse and other issues that can stand in the way of employment.

“I want to make it clear that this center is open to everyone,” Mr. Daley said in the statement. “It’s open to people who are unemployed, and to people who already have a job, but want a better one. It’s open to ex-offenders, people with disabilities and others who are frequently passed over by potential employers.”

The job center is funded through corporate contributions, funds from the Department of Planning and Development and tax-increment financing proceeds, according to the statement.
