Stratton v. Tracy: It Went as Expected

They met once. It went the way I expected.

Brandis Friedman moderated the only joint appearance of the general election. One hour from the WTTW studios. Early voting was already underway. This was the last scheduled chance for voters to see Juliana Stratton and Don Tracy answer the same questions in the same room.

Tracy called Stratton a socialist who wants to fund unaffordable programs. Stratton tied Tracy to Trump and blamed the Iran war plus tariffs for higher costs on rent, gas, groceries, and healthcare.

On immigration she called ICE Trump’s private police force and said she would abolish the agency. Tracy called the Chicago raids ugly and chaotic but blamed sanctuary policies and the refusal of state and local officials to cooperate.

She wants the federal minimum wage at $25 an hour. He called that a death sentence for small businesses. She pointed to the Illinois raise to $15 under Pritzker as proof it works.

She said she would not vote to fund the war in Iran. He said it was worth it if it stopped Iran from getting a nuclear weapon.

She pushed Medicare for All so no one has to choose between a doctor and rent. He called it a $30–50 trillion government takeover of a system that already works.

He defended cuts to SNAP: there is dignity in work. He would welcome a Trump endorsement if offered.

The race is the first open Illinois Senate seat in decades. Stratton is the lieutenant governor. Tracy is a Springfield attorney and the former state party chair. Polling has shown a double-digit lead for the Democrat. The last Republican to win a U.S. Senate race in Illinois was Mark Kirk in 2010.

I will add more once I sit with it.
