Former Democratic Socialists of America organizer Jake Altman sat down with The Free Press for a clear-eyed look at how the group changed.

Altman joined in 2013 looking for pragmatic social democracy after Occupy Wall Street. What he found over the next decade was a steady slide toward radicalism. The membership got younger, the anti-communists left or were driven out, and the cadre grew more comfortable with Leninist tactics and open hostility to American institutions.
He finally quit in 2022 after DSA blamed U.S. “imperialism” for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The new platform language—ending the presidency and Supreme Court, abolishing prisons, canceling all debt, closing overseas bases, lifting sanctions on Cuba, Venezuela, and Iran—makes the direction plain.
This is not Scandinavian social democracy. It is a revolutionary project that has learned how to win primaries and pressure the Democratic Party. The pattern is familiar: moderate language first, then the hard-liners take control.
Worth watching.
