Saturday Was the Crime

Glenn Beck walked a Boston Globe magazine story this week and consider me baffled. A lesbian bar in Greenfield, Massachusetts, wants one Saturday mask-optional and all hell breaks loose.

The title to Beck's segment is almost like a joke: A Clown, A Drag Queen, And A Lesbian Walk Into A COVID Friendly Bar...

The article is Annalisa Quinn’s, September 22: A Western Mass. lesbian bar required KN-95 masks. When it changed the rules, all hell broke loose.

Last Ditch opened in 2025. House rule: a well-fitted KN-95 or better, always. Greenfield had not reported a COVID case in months. The bar was broke. On August 31 the Instagram account tried to keep Saturday alive.

“It is with love we inform our immunocompromised disabled divas we will be opening Saturday nights as mask optional.”

That sentence was the crime. Comments called it a “mass disabling event,” reached for “eugenicist,” and hoped the place would be firebombed. The bar still masked six days. Saturday stayed empty. The meeting that followed did not settle the rule. It staged the harm language again.

Beck seems to be in stitches as he goes over this story. He reads a comment that mentions disability intersectionality. Wait. What does that mean?

In this room it means a badge. The identity is disabled. I am not saying nobody in Greenfield is sick. I am saying sickness is not what gave the comments their heat. The heat is the claim that one Saturday is violence against a class.

I see people still living in 2020 and 2021, when the pandemic was the live question. It is 2026. Greenfield had not reported a case in months. Beck is right that the mask, by now, is less an emergency tool than a marker of where you stand.

Last Ditch is not the only bar in town. For one optional night, someone still hoped the place would be firebombed. Beck asks how you run a business this way. You don’t. You run a test. That is identity politics with a different label, and it does not leave much of a bar.
