I regret not doing as thorough a read of Dr. King's Why We Can't Wait. I'll make sure that I won't leave anywhere the new book we'll be looking at on Thursday, Malcolm X Speaks. I hear the gasps already especially at the idea that Malcolm X has a philosophy that is being taught on the college level.
I'm sure for those of you who have heard of him, you may remember his rhetoric that sounded hateful as he was during most of his time in public life. Understand that he moderated his speech somewhat before he was assassinated in 1965. What happened was he went on a pilgrimage to Mecca and it broadened his outlook on humanity, because he saw men from different walks of life. They could be European, Arab, African, Indian, Asian, or what-have-you and they all worshiped together. That changed his outlook and who knows where that could have lead.
Also remember he was a member of the Nation of Islam. So his change of heart was remarkable even with being indoctrinated into the doctrine of the NOI. I'll let you fill in the blanks with what happened where he left the Nation. I would suggest you do one of two things, read his autobiography which he collaborated with Roots author Alex Haley or watch the 1992 film Malcolm X, directed by Spike Lee.
Just for the heck of it, it stars such people as Denzel Washington in the title role, Angela Bassett as his wife, as well as special appearances by Christopher Plummer, Peter Boyle, Al Sharpton, and Nelson Mandela. It's a great film if you have three hours to spare on a good evening. And more Malcolm X on this blog by the weekend.
